PSSP/YCZ Consent Week

In 2018, RPE was involved in Consent Week. A Health promotion brought to students at Green bay High School, Kelston Boys High School, Rutherford college and Massey High School over the month of August.

The week was collaboratively put together by student leaders from their School’s Youth Cyber Zone (YCZ) and Peer Sexuality Support (PSSP) team with support from Violence Free Communities (VFC), and the PSSP programme in addition to RPE.

The aim of the week was to facilitate discussion among students and unpack the ideas of consent and healthy relationships in order to encourage healthy consent culture within the school and the wider community. Over the course of the week students had the opportunity to explore varying themes regarding healthy relationships such as the importance of communication, rights and responsibilities, defining and navigating consent in person as well as in online spaces, and the importance of self-care, support and help-seeking.

Each School’s PSSP/YCZ teams were involved in collaborating on interactive events that promoted these themes which ranged from a consent kahoot quiz, a scavenger/poster challenge, Health Expo stalls, as well as a dance/concert component. Our facilitators had a fantastic experience working with and supporting the student leaders to bring this promotion to schools, and found that the activities helped to facilitate stimulating and positive discussion among the students during the week themselves.

We would like to thank Hadley Taylor and Alex Anderson (ADHB), Kristi Shaw (VFC), as well as the Awesome student leaders of Green bay, Kelston Boys, Rutherford and Massey for allowing RPE the opportunity to collaborate and support their efforts on an amazing health promotion.
